For anyone with a 2)sniffle, a 3)tonic, not just another cold 4)remedy that 5)takes the edge off the6)symptoms, but a cure that stops the virus in its tracks. Cambridge scientists have discovered a new 7)immune defense mechanism that could lead to the first effective treatment for the common cold. With each of us suffering three colds a year, children even more, it’s little wonder that the medicine would prove popular.
Woman A: So you haven’t got any sniffles or sore throat or anything like that. I think a lot of people would be up for that.
Woman B: You know, anything that can help people get well again, get back on their feet, get back to work, looking after the family, and your own children back at school as soon as possible sounds a really good idea.
For the first time, Medical Research Council scientists have shown that 8)antibodies are able to 9)cling to a virus as it invades a human cell. It had been thought that once inside, the virus couldn’t be attacked by the immune system and took over the cell to make copies of itself. But the new discovery shows that the antibodies in fact 10)trigger a virus 11)shredder to move in, destroying the bug within two hours, long before it has a chance to 12)highjack the cell.
Dr. Leo James (Lead Researcher): These are viruses that live in our 13)respiratory systems and in our14)sinuses, so an effective way to deliver a drug would be something in the form of a15)nasal spray. It would certainly be something that you would think about taking during the very, you know, early stages, as soon as you thought that you had a 16)viral 17)infection. You’d perhaps want to take the drug as early as possible for it to be as effective as possible.
The scientists say the discovery rewrites the medical textbooks, but it could be at least 10 years before it leads to that 18)elusive cure for the common cold.
