Complexity
Emily: I don’t really know what my process is going about picking a character other than I think I like to be surprised by the people that I play when I first come across them on the page. I mean, I like to find characters who are under some kind of conflict; they’re always very interesting characters under some kind of 1)duress. You know, you can find that in comedy and in drama.
I like complexity. I think people are very hard to work out, so I always like to find that in characters.
I wouldn’t want to say who I base my characters on, but I do steal from everyone I come across, whether it’s subconscious or not. I think you have to be open as an actor to, you know, coming across and absorbing and being like a sponge and soaking up everything that you see, watch the world go by and pick up people’s 2)nuances and traits, and that’s what I’m always fascinated by is what…what are the little 3)idiosyncrasies that make people different.
Critique
Interviewer 1: How would you normally decide what you’re going to wear to a big awards ceremony anyway?
Emily: You shouldn’t care what anyone’s gonna think. It’s so subjective. People are gonna hate it or they’re gonna like it, and so I always wear what feels right and something that I’ve never worn before. I think it’s nice to do something that makes you feel like you could get 4)annihilated for. I think that’s often quite a good way to go.
Horror
Interviewer 2:Now, getting involved with this film, I’m essentially just reading there’s a big article that you’re kind of going into mainstream movies and…
Emily: Oh, really?
Interviewer 2: ….abandoning your…
Emily: Oh, no, oh 5)God forbid I do a big movie.
Interviewer 2: I thought, “Isn’t that weird that that becomes news?”
Emily: I don’t know. It’s so weird! Is that what people are saying? Geez!
Interviewer 2: I think people look for anything to talk about and that happened to be one of them, which…
Emily: Yeah, well, the thing is that, I don’t care how big the movie is. I don’t care how small the movie is. I don’t care how big my part is or how small it is. I just am attracted to doing something that I’ve never done before…
Interviewer 2: Yeah.
Emily: …so that’s why I wanted to do the Wolfman, and, you know, it’s a really good movie and look who’s in it.
Interviewer 2: Yes.
Emily: You know, it’s not like I’m doing a movie with…with just anyone, you know, it’s like you work with that 6)caliber of people, and if it’s of a big scale then it’s of a big scale, but I would have done a movie with the two of them if it was, you know…
Interviewer 2: …just a one million dollar….
Emily: Yeah, if we were filming in, you know, 7)the back of beyond.
Interviewer 2: Nice. And you’ve had a pretty good year. Obviously Young Victoria got you a lot of attention.
Emily: Yeah.
Interviewer 2: And this film is kind of a…obviously it’s very different, but were you ever familiar with these universal monsters growing up, or …?
Emily: Uh, I mean, I didn’t tend to watch the monster movies when I was younger ’cause I was scared of everything as a kid, so my parents decided not to torture me with showing me horror movies. My dad grew up watching…my dad loves the old monster movies, but I think when I got older I started to watch them. And I was so fascinated with monsters, ’cause there’s something so sad about them in a way, something kind of tragic about them being addicted to this beast and 8)thriving off it, and then the 9)remorse and the regret of what they’ve done.
Interviewer 2: Mmm hmm.
Emily: I always found that kind of dual existence really interesting, you know…
Interviewer 2: I think there was…
Emily: …the humanity in the beast or the beast in the human.
Interviewer 2:Yeah exac…and I think there was a big part of that and, obviously it’s a big part of this here. How did you approach this character? Because it’s not your typical…
Emily: Yeah.

Emily: Yeah, I mean, I…I knew I was gonna have to run around and be chased. I knew that that was probably gonna be my role, as the girl in the movie, at some point I’m gonna get chased, but I wanted to make sure she wasn’t just flowery and pure and 10)ethereal. I wanted to make sure she was…Yes, she’s pure, yes, she’s good, but she’s really courageous…
Interviewer 2:Yeah.
Emily: …in how good she is, you know, I think there is something courageous if you’re willing to see the good in everyone and willing to help them change themselves or save themselves; very feminine quality, though, to change the man, attempt to change the man and save the man.

采访者甲：在参加某场大型颁奖盛会时，你一般是怎么决定自己该穿什么样的衣服的呢？
艾米莉：你不应该去在乎其他人会怎么想。这太过于主观了。人们也许会喜欢它，或者会讨厌它，所以我总是穿着自己感觉合适且以前从没有穿过的衣服。我认为敢于做一些你觉得可能会被别人诟病的事情，这也挺不错的。我认为那通常是个相当不错的做法。
