  We all hear popular 1)superstitions when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday. And no player wants to wear the number 13. It is said that superstitions have been a part of sports since their beginning. Players and fans alike have their ways of 2)avoiding bad luck.
  Some superstitions are stranger than others. For example, Michael Jordan (a graduate of North Carolina) always wore his blue North Carolina 3)shorts under his Bulls uniform for good luck. Baseball 4)pitcher Turk Wendell brushes his teeth and chews 5)licorice between every 6)inning. Wade Boggs, the famous 7)third baseman, eats only chicken the day of a game and draws a symbol that means “To Life注” in the dirt before every 8)at bat.
  Here are some other common superstitions.
  
  Baseball
  Spitting into your hand before picking up the 9)bat is said to bring good luck.
  A 10)wad of gum stuck on a player’s hat brings good luck.
  Lending a bat to a fellow player is a serious 11)jinx.
  Some players actually sleep with their bat to break out of a hitting 12)slump or stay in a 13)groove.
  
  Basketball
  Wipe the 14)soles of your sneakers for good luck.
  Bounce the ball before taking a 15)foul shot for good luck.
  
  Fishing
  Fish may not bite if a barefoot woman passes you on the way to the dock.
  Throw back your first catch for good luck.
  It is bad luck to change 16)rods while fishing.
  Don’t tell anyone how many fish you’ve caught until you’re done, or you won’t catch another.
  
  Football
  Double numbers on a player’s uniform brings good luck.
  It’s bad luck for a professional football player to take a new number when he is traded to another team.
  A 17)mascot is an important good luck symbol.
  
  Golf
  Start only with odd-numbered 18)clubs.
  Carry coins in your pockets for good luck.
  
  Ice Hockey
  It is bad luck for hockey 19)sticks to lie crossed.
  It is bad luck to say “20)shutout” in the 21)locker room before a game.
  Players believe they’ll win the game if they tap the goalie on his 22)shin 23)pads before a game.
  
  Tennis
  It’s bad luck to hold more than two balls at a time when 24)serving.
  Avoid wearing the color yellow.
  Walk around the outside of the 25)court when switching sides for good luck.

  有些球员会和他们的球棒一起睡觉,以求摆脱低迷状态或维持最佳状态。
  
  篮球
  擦擦球鞋底能带来好运。
  在罚球之前先拍一拍球能带来好运。
  
  钓鱼
  去码头的路上若有一名赤脚女人从你身旁经过,鱼可能就不会上钩了。
  把第一杆上钩的猎物放回去能带来好运。
  垂钓中途换钓杆不吉利。
  在钓完之前不要告诉别人你钓了多少条鱼,不然你就再也钓不到了。
  
  美式足球
  双数号码球衣会带来好运。
  职业球员效力新球队时用新号码会走霉运。
  吉祥物是一个重要的吉利标志。
  
  高尔夫球
  只用单数编号的球杆开始比赛。
  衣袋里装几枚硬币以求好运。
  
  冰上曲棍球
  球棍交叉平躺在地上很不吉利。
  比赛前在衣帽间说“shutout(使对方无法得分)”会带来恶运。
