State University of New York: Dr. Joseph G. Feldman pointed out in a recent AJPH that the prognosis of smokers in non-HIV infected women who received HAART was similar to that of non-HIV infected women Smokers were poorer and were more likely to fail in immune reconstitution. The study found that the prevalence of HIV infection among smokers was worse than that of nonsmokers; Dr. Feldman and colleagues analyzed the impact of smoking on women participating in multisectoral HIV research. The study was a multi-point longitudinal study evaluating HIV-infected women registered between 1994 and 1995; 994 women with HAART had an average follow-up of 7.9 years. Smokers present a rather significant high risk; compared with non-smokers, smokers respond less well to treatment with the virus,
