Foreword The United States Army Tank Engine Company and Cummins Diesel Engine Company (TACOM / Cummins) since 1975 to study adiabatic diesel engine. The beginning of a few years, the momentum is not: in recent years, progress is more significant, more and more widespread attention. Now the study is being conducted not only in the United States, but also in Japan, Western Europe and the Soviet Union. According to the 1984 report, it is estimated that the research costs for this field will exceed 80 million, 60 million and 40 million U.S. dollars respectively in the United States, Japan and the European Community over the next three to five years. A brief overview of the potential benefits and problems to be solved with adiabatic engines and their future are provided based on the United States Proceedings of Insulated Engines, 1983 and 1984 (SAE SP-543 and SP-571). Before describing the advantages and problems, a brief description of the term “adiabatic engine” is given. “Insulation” means no heat exchange phenomenon
