发动机一出现,人们就试图往燃油中掺水以改善发动机的工作过程。水在燃油-空气充量中的存在能降低循环的温度和最高压力,减少气缸活塞组和燃烧室表面的热负荷,降低对燃油辛烷值的要求,减少氮氧化物的排放量。40年以前,就将向燃油中喷水的方法作为一种强制的措施而采用,以保证发动机在使用低辛烷值汽油时能在较高转速和压缩比的条件下工作。拖拉机发动机向燃油中掺水可以使这种发动机使用低级煤油。由于苏联组织生产高辛烷值汽油,在汽化器发动机中实际上曾一度停止将水作为燃油的添加剂而使用。近来,对汽油掺水的兴趣又重新提高了,这首先是由于需要减少石油燃料的消耗量以及提高对大气净化的要求而引起的。
