I~n NABU 1992/102 and my A History of Eshnunna, Mari and Assyria....p 3, I proposed that u-iliya, the first king of Eshnunna, was promoted to the position of ensi, or king, from the son of the ensi as a high ranking scribe. In the present work I have investigated the careers of other ensi governors of the Akkadian and Ur Ⅲ periods.
