Chengdu; capital of Sichuan Province and home to some 1)cuddly residents, “Try doing that.” …famed for its cultural charms and fiery cuisine. “It’s hot!” I uncover the changing face of Chengdu, “Did you catch that at all?” …and hang out with the locals to bring you all the city has to offer.
Street of Living Tradition
To get the feel of old Chengdu, most people will go down to the Jin Li area. Jin Cheng or Jin City was the ancient name of Chengdu. So Jin Li, literally translates to “the centre of Chengdu.” Jin Li has it all;2)artisans, colorful shops and popular food. It’s Chengdu’s “street of living tradition.”
Look what we have here; the Chinese traditional 3)shadow puppets called Pi Ying Xi. These are made out of pig skin with coloring on it and then you have a light in the background, so, basically, it’s like a shadow show.
Hey, you. Ha ha ha…4)Gee, my nose5)itches, huhm.
This thing is called San Da Pao – three big 6)cannons.
I am now going to try my hand at this San Da Pao, traditional Chengdu snack made out of Nuo Mi (7)glutinous rice). Ready? Go ahead. Right?
I graduated. I’ve always wanted to be a salesperson. Red sugar sauce and sesame on top of this San Da Pao.
Culture of Changing Masks
Far away from the cultural capitals of Beijing and Shanghai, Chengdu is adapting Sichuanese culture to modern times. Here Sichuanese opera still takes center stage. The opera’s trademark is its changing masks. Actors reveal over 10 different faces in less than 20 seconds. Typically performed by men, today’s opera has a new face. I guess 8)this is one secret that ain’t leaving Sichuan.
The 9)Volcanic Hot Pot
Chengdu’s other claim to fame is its fiery Sichuanese cuisine. Top on the list; the volcanic hot pot. It’s one dish you can’t eat alone, so I bring my friend Rain.
Narrator: Aah, we get a basket first. OK.
Rain: Oh, yes. I pick first.
Narrator: We pick what we like, very simply, like a buffet, but it’s uncooked, right? I like cow’s throat, goose10)intestine. These are really good once you put it in this spicy Chengdu hot pot.
Why do people in Chengdu love to eat hot pot?
Rain:(in Chinese) People say the climate in Sichuan is humid, so it’s natural that we eat spicy food to combat the moisture.
Narrator: At the heart of the hot pot lies the 11)lethal Sichuan peppercorn that hits you at first bite. Hao La! Things are really starting to heat up. The reason why I like hot pot’s because, in Chinese it’s called Guo Yin, a lot of fun. You sweat, you tear,… Aaahh, but you know what? Feels goooood! Feels gooood.
I’m someone who loves chili, but even this is too much. I give up! (Sneeze)Somebody call 9-1-1, ’cause I’m on fire.
Cradle of Rock Bands
As night falls, Chengdu comes alive and I’m about to experience the 12)vibe of this historical city.
I wonder what else Chengdu 13)has up its sleeves. I head out to a modern club that’s the haven of local rock bands; the hugely successful “Little Bar.” Running the show here is Tang Lei, better known as Chengdu’s “godmother of independent rock.”
That’s the most important thing about the “Little Bar” right here; it’s because this is like a cradle to a lot of bands out there.
Local Punk Rock band, Ashura, and 14)front man, Tai Ran, first started out in “Little Bar.” Today they’re the city’s rock sensation. Despite its size, “Little Bar” is 15)charting the course for young rockers with big dreams. Fans from all over Chengdu call the “Little Bar” home.

成都,四川的首府,也是某种可爱动物的家乡。“试试这样干。”……此地以其文化特色驰名,还有火辣的美食。“好辣!”我要揭开成都变化中的面貌,“你到底看到了没?”……还要和当地人一起四处闲逛,发掘这个城市所有的魅力。
锦里一条街
为了感受老成都,大多数人会去锦里那儿。锦城,是成都的古名。所以锦里,从字面意思看,就是指“成都的中心”。在锦里,手工艺人,各式商店以及广受欢迎的美食,包罗万有。这里是成都的“传统文化一条街”。
大家看看这里,中国传统的皮影戏。用猪皮所制,然后上色,在背后打光,其实就像是影子戏。
嘿,你!哈哈哈……吖,我的鼻子痒,嗯。
这叫“三大炮”。
我现在就要尝试亲手做这个“三大炮”——由糯米制成的传统成都小吃。准备好了吗?来吧。对吗?

成都远离文化之都北京和上海,正在调整四川文化以迎合现代要求。在这里,川剧仍然占据着很重要的地位。川剧的标志是变脸。演员能在二十秒钟以内展现十张不同的脸谱。一般是由男性演出,但今天的川剧有一张新面孔(开始有女性登场)。我想这也是唯一个不流传出四川的机密吧。
成都之味
成都另一闻名于世的特色是火辣的川菜。最著名的当然是火山火锅。这个菜不能独吃,所以我把朋友小雨给叫上了。
主持人:啊,我们先拿个篮子。好的。
小雨:对,我先挑。
主持人:我们选自己喜欢的,很简单,就像自助餐一样,但这些都是生的,对吧?我喜欢牛喉、鹅肠。只要将材料放进成都的火锅里,味道一流!
为什么成都人喜欢吃火锅?
小雨:他们说四川很潮,所以说吃一点辣椒以抵御这种潮湿的气候。
主持人:火锅的主料是辣得要命的四川辣椒子,让你一吃来劲。好辣!一切都开始升温了。我喜欢吃火锅是因为,用中文说就是“过瘾”,即好玩。吃得满头大汗、眼水直流……啊,但你知道吗,这样感觉很好!感觉很好!
我是个爱吃辣的人,但这个实在太辣了。我投降了!(打喷嚏)有没有人报警啊,我着火了。
摇滚乐队的摇篮
夜幕降临,成都变得饶有生气,我也要体验一下这古城的活力。
不晓得成都还有什么法宝,我前往本地摇滚乐队爱去的流行酒吧——非常成功的小酒馆。经营酒吧的人叫唐蕾,更为人所熟悉的称号是“成都独立摇滚教母”。
那是关于小酒馆最重要的一点,因为这里是许多乐队的摇篮。
本地朋克摇滚乐队阿修罗的主音泰然,就是在小酒馆出道的。如今,他们已经成为震撼成都的摇滚力量。虽然不大,但酒吧为怀有宏大梦想的年轻摇滚乐手开创道路。成都各地的摇滚乐迷亲切的把小酒馆称为“家”。
