Samantha: Alright, for shopping we have a bunch of options. We could just cruise around and window shop; we could head into one of the big department stores, or if you want the real American experience, we could go to the mall.
Celia: ①I haven’t got a clue about how things work around here. What’s the difference?
Samantha: Well, if we window shop, it really depends on the neighborhood. Shops tend to be grouped together, so if we head downtown, we might find enough 1)hipster or 2)low-key type places. Uptown tends to be more 3)chic. It all depends on what you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend.
Celia: Alright, what about the department stores?
Samantha: That also depends. Department stores sell everything, men’s clothes, women’s clothes, jackets, underwear, sporting goods, shoes, accessories, ②the whole nine yards. Some are more 4)upscale: they carry all the top brands but you have to pay accordingly. There are also cheaper places where the clothes are more 5)generic but you can find really awesome deals.
Celia: OK, and the mall?
Samantha: Well the mall is a little bit of everything, all the different stores you know and love gathered into one place. They don’t just do clothes; you can get books, electronics, food, whatever you want. The prices will be about the same as window shopping on the street, but you have the convenience of having everything gathered together in one place. A lot of times, especially on the weekend, people will spend the whole day at the mall—stop by in the morning, have lunch there, and stay until closing.
Celia: Wow, that’s a little 6)overwhelming.
I’m not looking to spend too much, and I don’t think shopping in a department store sounds so interesting. What do you think?
Samantha: I think today’s your lucky day because I know the perfect place to go. Trust good old Sam to show you a good time. Follow me. We’re jumping on this bus.
Celia: Wait...Where are you taking me?
Samantha: Patience is a virtue my friend. That’s what separates humans from the animals. Just hold your horses.

Samantha: 嗯，购物中心就像是各种店铺的大杂烩，你所知道并且喜欢的所有不同类型的商店都聚集在同一个地方。他们不只是买衣服，你还可以买到书籍、电器、食品，以及你想要的任何东西。价格与街边商店的差不多，不过比较方便的就是所有的东西都在同一个地方。很多时候，特别是在周末的时候，人们会花上一整天的时间逛购物中心-早上顺路过去，在那里吃午饭，一直待到晚上关门。
