Objective To study the activity of natural killer (NK) cells in patients with malignant tumors and its clinical significance. Methods LDH release assay was used to measure peripheral blood NK cell activity in 43 healthy adults and 267 cancer patients. Results The activity of NK cells in patients with malignant tumors was significantly lower than that of normal controls (P < 0.01). The decrease in NK cell activity in patients with metastasis was more pronounced, compared with those without metastasis (P < 0.05). The activity of NK cells was significantly decreased after chemotherapy and radiotherapy (P < 0.01), while the activity of NK cells was significantly increased after IL 2 treatment (P <0.01), but lower than that of normal controls (P <0. 1). Conclusion The significant decrease of NK cell activity is associated with the occurrence, development and metastasis of malignant tumors. Monitoring NK cell activity can help to evaluate the immune function during the treatment of tumor patients.
