Stormy Night: The Priceless Purity of Friendship
Born Enemies, Sworn Friends
A little goat, Mei, wanders into a dark mountain cabin[小屋], seeking shelter[遮挡] from a storm. There he finds a fellow refugee[避难者]. Over the night, the strangers become friends and they promise to meet each other again, using the password, “stormy night.The following day, whom should meet Mei for a picnic but... a wolf named Gav! Despite the odds[差异], Gav and Mei really do like each other. Gentle Gav and innocent[纯真的] Mei become a regular twosome[两人组], meeting for long walks as their wonderful, secret friendship deepens and grows. But their secret isn誸 safe for long. Soon Mei’s flock[羊群] and Gav’s pack[兽群] have found the friends out and forbidden their alliance[联合], pressuring the devoted[忠实的] companions to spy on[侦查] each other’s kind. Therefore, the two have to set off over a mountain in search of “an emerald[翡翠] forestwhere wolf and goat can live side by side.
The Real Meaning of Trust
The movie, which is based on Yuichi Kimura’s extraordinary[非凡的] best-selling picture books that have won loyal followers from kindergarteners to grandparents, is about a wolf and a goat developing a friendship that transcends[超越] the natural enmity[敌意] between predator[食肉动物] and prey[猎物]. But the relationship is really hard to keep. Gav is tormented[折磨] by his literally[字面上] 襴olfishinstincts[本能] and Mei only compounds[使复杂] his troubles. Mei’s flock and Gav’s pack hover[盘旋] in the background poised to[准备] tear the two apart. The unique appeal of this story lies in its radical[根本的] purity, which reveals the thin line separating trust from strife[冲突], in all relationships, whether they are familial, friendly, romantic, social or international. Yet it also dares to imagine a means of reaching beyond the inherent[与生俱来的] contradictions and complexities to reach true understanding. Director’s Profile
Gisaburo Sugii, one of Japan’s top directors of anime, began his legendary[传奇的] career by illustrating[绘制] and directing many episodes[集] of Japan’s first animated TV series, Astroboy. Then he moved to Group TAC注2 and worked on some of his best-known comic-adapted movies and TV series, such as Night on the Milky Way Railroad (1985), Touch (1986), and Captain Tsubasa (2001).
