(It’s 6 p.m. on thanksgiving Day at the Clarks’ apartment. Jeff, Mia, Lori and Heidi are just sitting down to eat a big Thanksgiving dinner.)
Heidi: Wow, what a feast1! Turkey, potatoes, stuffing...
Jeff: Well, Mom and I have been cooking all day1.
  Heidi: What? Mia didn’t help?
Mia: I made the pumpkin pie!
Heidi: Uh-oh. Thanks for letting me know.
  Mia: Very funny!
Heidi: Just kidding. I’m sure it’s delicious.
Mia: Thanks. Well, should we give thanks for the food? Then we can eat!
Jeff: No, wait! There’s something we need to do first. It’s time for a Clark family tradition2. The telling of the First Thanksgiving story! In 1620, a group of people called the Pilgrim2 arrived in America from England.
Lori: Their first winter in America was terrible. They didn’t have enough food.
Jeff: Or good houses to live in.
Lori: Half of the Pilgrims died that winter.
Jeff: The rest of the Pilgrims were very dad.
Lori: By the next spring, some Native Americans made friends with the Pilgrims.
Jeff: They said they would teach the Pilgrims how to hunt and how to grow food.
Lori: By the next fall, the Pilgrims had plenty of food.
Jeff: So they had a big feast. They thanked God for his blessings.
Lori: And thanked the Native Americans3for their help!
Jeff: Everyone ate and ate and ate.
Mia: And now it’s time for us to eat and eat and eat!

  (15 minutes later)
Jeff: Did everyone get enough to eat?
   Heidi: Yes. More than enough.
Jeff: Good. Now it’s time for another Clark family Thanksgiving tradition.
  Heidi: What’s that?
Mia: It’s time to share what we’re thankful for this year!
  Jeff: Right!
Heidi: I’m thankful for wonderful friends to spend the holidays with! What about you, Jeff?
Jeff: I’m thankful that since Mom and I did the cooking, Mia has to do all the dishes!
  Mia: Very funny.
  (They all laugh.)
