According to the monitoring conducted by China's Economic Survival Monitoring Center on the 580000 state-owned and state-controlled industrial enterprises investigated by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the economic benefits of state-owned and state-controlled industrial enterprises were significantly better in 1999 than in 1998 and better than in 1997. At the enterprise level, in 1999, a total profit of 586 million state-owned and state-controlled industrial enterprises amounted to 96.7 billion yuan
