《鸿门宴》中“军霸上”的“军”字,课本及其思考与练习均注释为“驻军,名词,用作动词”。从字义的源流上看,这里恰恰是颠倒了“军”字的字义源流。《说文》:“军,圜围也,从车从包省。”“军”的上部形体即古包字。《经籍纂诂》卷十二“军”字条:“围也,包车为军,币自为师,皆字意也”。《广雅释言》也说:“军,围也。”唐朝玄应《一切经音义》引晋人吕忱《字林》说:“包车为军皆字意也。”字形的意思正是指用战车围绕成军营,这也正是古代驻军的真实情状。
